Those 4 Letters…

Sometimes life just sucks.

I was 14 and I hadn’t had a period in over a year. My mom had finally caught on because I got caught passing out my pads to other girls at school. I thought they needed them more than I did 🤷‍♀️

My mom scheduled my first gynecologist appointment. I was 15 by the time he could fit me into his busy schedule. Columbia, TN isn’t huge but Dr.Kuykendall was very prestigious. He delivered both of my big sisters and just happened to be skiing in the Swiss Alps when mom went into labor with me. I was mortified when a man walked in the room. I had insisted on my mother staying in the waiting room but as soon as he came in I wanted her with me. He looked at me, I wasn’t sure what he saw, but he turned to the nurse and said, “make a note of possible Pecos”. He didn’t say P-C-O-S, he literally called it “Pecos”.

After the pap smear, breast exam, and even a colon check (yes the doctor stuck his finger in my rear-end to check for polyps and this was completely normal for a doctor who had been practicing for 25+ years but the newer ones don’t do that) he told me I had “Pecos”. Again, what the crap is that? Keep in mind that this was 2002 so there’s no Google on phones because there’s no smart phones. And we had dial up internet. So he explains about a few issues. Getting pregnant being one. Heartbreaking.

But, that was 18 years ago. I’ll fill you in more tomorrow. Between the then and now. Just know, you are not alone! You can get through this!
